A trip to Portstewart!
Morelli's Honeycomb Ice Cream |
Portstewart is a quaint town that neighbours Portrush. The town is known for its promenade, which is somewhere I like to go for a walk, looking out onto the sea- with a wee ice cream! This is a peaceful town with a laid-back attitude, a perfect place to go to relax and unwind.

Speaking of ice-cream, if you’re looking for some in Portstewart you are in luck! Within this little town there are FIVE ice cream shops!! The most infamous one has to be Morelli’s which is located in the middle of the promenade. The shop is run by the Morelli family and was established in 1911. The original building was knocked down in 2002 to allow for a brand new shop which holds 200 people and a new menu- whilst keeping all the classics, like the ‘knickerbocker glory’ and the local favourites such as the ‘yellow man sundae’. However, if it’s too cold for an ice cream, there are plenty of cafes that you can go to. In fact, there are at least 10 cafes on the promenade, you’re spoilt for choice!

With choices such as Villa which is a bar and grill with a nightclub above called Ocean Club and there is also Me and Mrs Jones, specialising in cocktails! Finally, the Anchor Bar Complex, it consists of a bistro, bar and club and is the most popular place to go for students in the area.

Something that is unique to Portstewart is the Red Sails event which happens every summer. It’s a week filled with lots of different activities to keep the kids entertained during the summer, such as sandcastle competition, magic shows and lots more. The week-long event finishes with the popular Red Sails finale fireworks, it’s known to bring big crowds so you’ll need to get there early to secure a spot!
Portstewart also has one of the loveliest beaches, the Portstewart Strand. This beach is protected by the National Trust and is award winning! It has obtained a Blue Flag status and was named ‘Best Blue Flag Beach’ in the UK. It allows cars onto the beach which is perfect for a sunny summer day- letting you pack your picnic and towels, maybe even a BBQ!
Portstewart is a charming wee town, it is the perfect place to go for a coffee or an ice cream and sit and watch the sea.
