A Guide to Portrush

Portrush (aka ‘The Port’) is a lovely wee seaside town which looks out onto the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a well known holiday destination for many who live in Northern Ireland and overseas as well. It’s also where I work! During the summer months when I'm working I’ve been able to see a number of stunning sunsets and had gorgeous days in the sun.

What to do in Portrush?

One of the most popular reasons to come to Portrush is to visit the beach. There are two beautiful award-winning beaches: the West Strand and the East Strand. Both have obtained the Blue Flag award from the Seaside Awards, which means that they have met the highest quality in water, facilities and safety. They’re perfect for surfing, swimming, paddle boarding or just sitting and relaxing on the sand enjoying the sunny weather.

Another popular attraction in the town is Curry’s Fun Park, which was once called Barry’s Amusements. Barry’s was a staple to Portrush, it opened in 1925. It was a summer destination for many people in their childhood so it holds a lot of nostalgia. Unfortunately Barry’s closed in 2019, leaving people quite upset, but the Curry family took it over and in 2022 they opened the amusements with a new name and a few new rides! There’s rides for everyone; the thrill-seeking lovers would enjoy the Big Dipper, the Cyclone and the Beast. But if big drops and fast turns aren’t for you, there are other options like the Dodgems, Ghost Train and Helter Skelter that would be more suited to you. There are options for the kids as well, such as the Hobby Horses, the Mini Dodgems and the Crazy Caterpillar ride.

There are also so many wonderful places to walk with amazing views. One being Ramore Head where a path takes you around the headland, giving you access to unbelievable views of the ocean.

Where to eat in Portrush?

Obviously after a busy day exploring Portrush, you’ll need some food. And you’re in luck because Portrush has some incredible places to eat. One well-known and well-loved eatery is Ramore Restaurants, which is a collection of restaurants, there's everything from seafood to Italian to classic pub food- so there is something for everyone.

Another place to eat is Igloo Pizza- which is a take away service which serves delicious pizzas.

Lastly you can’t go to the seaside and not go to the chippy! And there are numerous chippies in Portrush, such as Chequers, Mr Chips and the Dolphin.

Hopefully I’ll be seeing you around ‘The Port’ soon!
